Conversation Starter Jokes for Kids – connecting and laughing
Have you entered the “Knock Knock” phase yet? We are firmly entrenched in it but most of the jokes the kids tell make no sense.
One of our favorite things while we’re driving lately is making up and telling jokes. The kids LOVE when I will teach them jokes and listen to their jokes. They practice so they can tell their friends.
We’ve also found that jokes are such an easy conversation starter. What better way to get talking than to start with a laugh?
A few of our favorite jokes around here are:
- Why did the rooster cross the road? ……………..The chicken was on vacation!”
- “Knock knock…………..Who’s there?……….. Ach…………..Ach who?………….. Bless you! You sneezed!”
- “Knock knock………… Who’s there?……….. Woo………….. Woo who?……….What are you so excited about?”
- What do you get when you cross Bambi with a ghost?……………BamBOO!
- What’s brown and sticky?……………A stick!!
Here are a few fun books that have great conversation starter jokes:
The Try Not to Laugh Challenge: Joke Book for Kids and Family – You might have seen some of the Try not to Laugh YouTube videos with your kids. This joke book has taken that concept and turned it into an interactive game you can play with kids, or that siblings can play together.
Laugh-Out-Loud Jokes for Kids – This joke book is inexpensive and a bestseller.
The Everything Kids’ Giant Book of Jokes, Riddles, and Brain Teasers – The great things about this book is that it includes riddles and brain teasers as well, which are always fun for starting conversations. This would be a good one to bring on a trip so you have a variety of things to think and laugh about in the car. So long as you can handle a constant stream of jokes from the back seat.
Ok, your turn- what kid friendly joke do you love?

I loved it when my boys first discovered jokes. They would be laughing so hard that you couldn’t hear the punch line. Still laughing is contagious and it feels so good to have a belly laugh with your kids.

Why is 6 afraid of 7 ? Because 7, 8, 9! (7 ate 9)
We are heading out for a road trip to a cabin in the north, so I have been making a list of activities to keep my kids busy in the van. I’ve collected a list of jokes to teach them while we drive. Ellen’s website has a great list of jokes (lots of kid appropriate) for her classic joke monday segment. Here’s one that we love….why did the banana go to the hospital? Because he wasn’t peeling good.
What’s a fish say when he runs into a wall? Damn!
What is invisible and smells like carrots? Bunny toots
How do you catch a polar bear? Cut a hole on the ice and put peas around the hole. When he comes up to take a pea, you kick him in the ice hole!
I have a few off the top of my head:
Why was the skeleton afraid of crossing the road?
He didn’t have any guts.
Knock knock–>who’s there?–> panther–>panther who?–>my panther(pants are) falling.
Knock knock–>who’s there?–>banana–>banana who?–>repeat the joke from the beginning one or two more times then the next time say orange instead of banana–> orange who?–orange(aren’t) you glad I didn’t say banana?
Why did the boy throw his clock out the window?
He wanted to see time fly.
What’s a cow’s favorite thing to do?
Go watch a moooovie.
My five year old’s fav joke…. drum roll, please…..
Where does a bee go potty?
The B P Station
🙂
He can tell it all day long, lol.
These are great! I love the Bambi joke! JDanil loves to make up his own jokes that only he seems to get.
We are a huge fan of knock knock jokes! Although, my son is currently in the stage of wanting to make up his own that make no sense whatsoever and he wants to tell them constantly. It’s sweet and he finds them hilarious, and I do a pretty good job at pretending.. but I’m always glad to add to the arsenal of knock knock jokes that actually make sense. 🙂 I loved the jokes you listed. He loved them too! Thank you for sharing them with us. I have previously posted some of our favorite corny jokes. Here’s the link if you’d like to take a look…
