LIVE LOVE NOW – Relieve the Pressure and Find Real Connection with Our Kids By Rachel Macy Stafford
In Three Words: communication, relief, connection
Recommended for: Parents longing for connection with their tweens and teens yet fearing it’s too late. If you want to encourage your child’s innate gifts and be a steady guiding presence in your child’s life, this is the book for you.
LIVE LOVE NOW helps parents deeply connect with their kids and support them in learning to navigate life’s inevitable challenges with authenticity and compassion. The book is divided into three parts that teach you as the parent how to:
- Be a truth-teller, not a taskmaster
- Be an encourager, not an enforcer
- Be a guide, not a half listener
Each part focuses on specific difficulties kids face like being rejected, micromanaged, or feeling not-enough. Rachel teaches parents how to support their kids in managing these difficulties. You will learn how to be a steady presence in an often scary world. What I like best about this book is that Rachel helps you as the parent regulate your internal world so that you CAN actually be there for your kids. You can see an example of this in Rachel’s essay here: Relationship Repair: Six Ways to Rebuild Connection with Kids and Teens
I prefer parenting books that I can pick up and flip open without having to read through from page one and this works well for that. If your child is feeling really worried you could flip to that section. If they experience a rejection and you just don’t know what to say, flip to that section. This book is quite readable with short sections. Each chapter includes questions for reflection which would work well for journaling or a parenting book group discussion. On Amazon you can take a look inside this book. One feature that makes this book very useable are the “waypoints” sprinkled through the book that give you actionable tips.
