A couple years ago I had never heard of an ECMO machine. I had never sat thousands of miles away from a dear friend and nervously checked online over and over to find out how one tiny-six-day-old baby fared as this amazing machine did all the work of her lungs and heart.
I had never had such a difficult conversations that involved deciding whether to send the gifts before or after we knew if the baby would survive.
A couple of years ago Julianne was born with Ebtein’s Anomaly, a congenital heart defect that nearly took her very short life. She is now an active 2 year old and doing very well, thanks to multiple heart surgeries.
Julianne and her mom Clare are who I thought of when I was asked to participate in The Heart Project to benefit the American Heart Association [AHA].
All I know is that humans are fabulously complex creatures, and anybody who would ever dream of going in there and trying to fix something that’s broken, especially a really big part like a heart, must be crazy, but also totally admirable. It’s not something I could do and I really like to fix stuff! And then to think that it works sometimes…well, that just blows my mind.” ~Clare, heart mom
