Walnut Babies | Day 3 Creative Christmas Countdown
Ever since we’ve been together, my husband and I have had a yearly tradition of making each other a Christmas ornament. The ornament-making takes place in secret and we present each other these little creations in the glowing light of the tree.
A few years ago, when our boys were 1 and 3, they thought cracking walnuts was exciting, so we had a number of half walnut shells available come ornament making time. We each decided to use them in our crafts.
When it came time to exchange our ornaments he gave me a little cardboard box. I opened it up and to my surprise two googly eyed…creatures were staring up at me. They were made out of half walnut shells, had tails, noses and cute little whiskers, but something was Not Right.
“I…, uhhh, well, what are they? ” I asked tentatively.
“Mice! They’re walnut mice!”
“Oh!” and then I started to giggle.
“What??”
“You forgot the ears!”
He took the box to examine them and admitted that, yes, they were indeed, earless mice, and that he had *thought* something looked off about them, but just couldn’t put his finger on it. We put them on the tree anyway, and to this day they remain earless and I get a laugh taking them out of the decorations box each year.
SO- Today’s Christmas activity involves walnut shells and it is presented by a blogger whom I loved the first time I found her craft and creativity filled blog. Maggie, of Red Ted Art, presents Walnut Babies! I have always wanted to make walnut baby ornaments, thank you, Maggie for this tutorial!
Tutorial: Make Walnut Baby Ornaments
For the record, when I told my husband what I was writing he said (as I giggled and giggled):
If you were a nice wifey you would not be mocking my mice on your blog. They were made with love and care….
Well, they were made with love….
They’re walnut mice! Walnut mice don’t have ears! They’re faster that way! They’re sleek!….
I’m gonna glue ears on them this year and then you’ll be sorry…
